Sunglasses UV Rating

Have You Ever Wondered What it Means When Sunglasses Advertise Their UV Rating?

When most people choose a new pair of sunglasses, they often only look at how the glasses make them look. Style is important, but so is the protection the sunglasses offer your eyes.

As Optometrists living in Calgary, we appreciate the value of a good pair of sunglasses. Our city receives its fair share of sunshine throughout the year. It’s one of the things that Calgarians really enjoy about where we live. Living in a place like this, protective sunglasses are a must.

There are a lot of things you should consider when shopping for a new pair of sunglasses, and one of those things is their UV rating.

A Bit About UV Rays

UV (ultraviolet) rays are invisible wavelengths of light that exist just outside our visual spectrum. They are also commonly referred to as “UV light” and “UV radiation”. The sun is the main source of UV rays.

There are three types of UV rays: UVA, UVB, and UVC. UVC is blocked by our atmosphere, but both UVA and UVB rays pass through; UVA and UVB rays also easily pass through clouds.

Sunglass Lens UV Rating & Polarization

When choosing sunglasses, you want to choose sunglasses that have a rating of UV 400 (which blocks 99-100% of UVA/UVB rays). A rating of UV 400 means that they block wavelengths up to 400 nanometres.

This level of UV protection is important in protecting your eyes, as UV radiation can damage your eyes similarly to how they damage skin cells.

Polarized lenses help reduce glare for outdoor enthusiasts, but they can also be worn indoors to benefit people who are light-sensitive. Polarized lenses contain a special filter that blocks intense reflective glare.
