Do I Need Private Coverage for My Eye Exam?
The following organizations may cover some or all of your eye care:
Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan (AHCIP)
AHCIP will cover the following services for children under 19 and adults over 65 once every benefit year (July 1st to June 30th):
- One complete eye exam
- One partial exam
- One diagnostic procedure
Full coverage is also available for people between 19 and 65 whose procedures are medically necessary as the result of illness, trauma, or medical conditions. Such procedures include:
- Eye injuries and infections
- Foreign objects in one or both eyes
- Sudden vision changes
- Monitoring for glaucoma, retinal disease, and diabetic diseases or conditions
- Post-operative care for patients who have had cataracts
You will not be charged for services covered by AHCIP. But you are responsible for any additional costs associated with your treatment. Moderate-to-low income seniors who qualify can also receive financial support through the Dental and Optical Assistance Seniors Program.
Indigenous Services Canada
Indigenous Services Canada’s Non-Insured Health Benefits Program provides qualifying individuals with coverage for the following services:
- Eye exams (including general exams, single tests, and follow-up appointments)
- Corrective eyewear prescribed by a licensed vision care professional
- Lens replacement and eyeglass repairs
