The eye is a complex organ with many parts. Within the retina (the back of the eye), the macula is responsible for high-acuity vision. As you age, the macula can deteriorate which is known as age-related macular degeneration or AMD. Your eye doctor can detect AMD early, which allows for treatment and changes in your lifestyle to slow down the progression of this disease.
AMD comes in two forms, wet and dry. Treatment is dependent on which type of AMD is diagnosed. Typically, AMD will affect both eyes, but it may not progress at the same rate. Your eye doctor will determine the best course of action and monitor your eyes to prevent severe loss of vision.
